Japanese enjoy purple McVities Digestives

Monday 26 Feb 2007 Reporter: Tokyo correspondent Hiromi Muria
We all know that McVities have been busy tinkering away with their Digestives of late, a bit of mint here a dash of orange flavour there, in fact they've just launched a limited edition Butterscotch version of their Chocolate Digestive. But now NCOTAASD can reveal the startling fact that the Japanese have been enjoying purple potato ones! The McVities branded biscuits are baked in Japan under licence by MEIJI SEIKA who have added of all things purple sweet potato to their recipe.
The biscuits which are shipped 16 to a pack are smaller than those in UK, but the purple box proudly displays the McVities logo just the same, and the biscuits are stamped with it as usual. To complete their oriental charm a few black sesame seeds have been tossed in to the mix, and the biscuit has a faint sweetness possibly from the sweet potato.
The natural anthocyanin pigment in the sweet potatoes gives the biscuits their unusual colour. The pigment also has possible health benefits as it has antioxidant properties and belongs to a group of compounds called polyphenols which are also found in tea. So perhaps with a cup of tea, a sweet potato biscuit one can enjoy a double dose of healthy antioxidants, or maybe just sit back and enjoy a really strange Digestive.
